Alyson Ryan, LCSW, is a seasoned mental health professional, accomplished entrepreneur, and proven leader with over 18 years of experience driving impactful programs, building strong teams, and creating lasting change across Suffolk County. As the founder and executive director of Suffolk Counseling Services (SCS), Alyson transformed a $3,000 investment into a thriving mental health practice employing over 43 providers and support staff—serving hundreds of children, teens, and families across Long Island each year.
Through her work at SCS and beyond, Alyson has helped children navigate school transitions, led social-emotional groups for students, supported parents of children with special needs, and partnered with schools to create healthier learning environments. These experiences deeply inform her belief that education should be inclusive, supportive, and responsive to the needs of all students—from kindergarten through high school.
In addition to her clinical work, Alyson is a trusted executive known for her clarity, empathy, and ability to lead through uncertainty. She has successfully grown her business through times of financial challenge and expansion—experience that leaves her uniquely equipped to guide the Board of Education with fiscal responsibility and strategic vision.
Alyson’s leadership also extends into the community. Suffolk Counseling Services is a member of the Sayville, Babylon, and Smithtown Chambers of Commerce, and Alyson is a proud member of the Women Presidents Organization, a global network of women business leaders dedicated to growth and innovation.
Before launching her practice, Alyson led a countywide response program for survivors of sexual assault, partnering with the Suffolk County Police Department, District Attorney’s Office, local hospitals, and healthcare providers. Her ability to collaborate across systems to improve outcomes is a hallmark of her leadership style.
Alyson’s connection to public education is both professional and deeply personal. She and her husband Darwin—a high school math teacher, union representative, and varsity wrestling coach—are proud Sayville parents. Their daughter Ella (17) is Co-Captain of the Debate Team, an Art Club Ambassador, a member of Tri-M, and a talented musician in both the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble. Their son Max (13) co-captained the Middle School Wrestling Team and now plays on the JV Golf Team.
As a parent, Alyson understands the importance of feeling heard, supported, and confident in your child’s school experience—whether you’re sending a kindergartener off for the very first time or helping a high schooler plan their next steps. She believes that classrooms should be safe, welcoming, and grounded in evidence-based practices that support both academic growth and emotional well-being.
With strong ties to the district, a record of service, and a passion for education, Alyson Ryan is a thoughtful, experienced, and strategic choice for the Sayville Board of Education.
